Between the 1960’s and 80’s New York drag competitions known as “balls” transformed from elaborate pageantry to “vogue” battles.
So it should come as no surprise that Harlem was the birthplace of “vogue”, a highly stylized form of dance created by black and Latino LGBTQ communities. Cesar Valentino discovered vogue in 1982 and became infatuated with the self-celebratory dance genre while frequenting balls and gay clubs throughout New York’s West Village and Lower East Side. Vogue, influential American fashion and lifestyle magazine.It was founded in 1892 as a weekly high-society journal, created by Arthur Baldwin Turnure for New York City’s social elite and covering news of the local social scene, traditions of high society, and social etiquette; it also reviewed books, plays, and music.
The personae adopted by voguers were often a coded parody of white femininity, both glorifying and subverting ideals of beauty, sexuality and class. Over the years, the dance form has drawn inspiration from fashion poses in Vogue magazine, pantomimes, and even gymnastics.
Within the structures of the ballroom came voguing, a dance inspired by model poses inside the covers of Vogue magazine, but also influenced by Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and gymnastic moves. Valentino joined the ranks of the craft’s most celebrated originators soon thereafter, developing namesake moves such as the Valentino Dip.
