Undergarments are items of clothing worn beneath outer clothes, usually in direct contact with the skin, although they may comprise more than a single layer. Another invention of the 80s were trunk briefs. They serve to keep outer garments from being soiled or damaged by bodily excretions, to lessen the friction of outerwear against the skin, to shape the body, and to provide concealment or support for parts of it. Similar to its predecessor, boxer briefs were slightly longer along the thigh. The next step in the modern evolution of men's underwear came with Giorgio Armani in the form of boxer briefs, released in the 1980s. "Undergarments were pretty much kept well out of sight in the old days," said Ewa Sieranska, curator at the Central Textile Museum in Lodz, which loaned 140 items to the exhibit. Some even ceased to have the traditional y-shaped fly. They were initially made from linen, silk, merino, calico, cambric or nainsook in flesh pink tones or cream colours. The undergarment competition came in the form of a new underwear item called combinations.Combinations were first developed as a Victorian undergarment in 1877. Thanks to the development of rayon and spandex, intimates became comfortable and cute, unlike the plain, industrial undergarments worn for centuries before.
