Season 4 Gus Fring hired Walter White after Gale praised a sample of Walt's blue meth as the purest he'd ever seen. Following this point, Gale became Walt's lab assistant. Gale's murder occurred in the Breaking Bad season 3 finale and solidified Walt's position as an enemy of Gus. Jesse, who had killed Gale to protect Walt — the event that probably changed Jesse the most, prior to his captivity — was handed over to these people because Walt was mad at him.
