Smenkhkare, who was given the same title (Neferneferuaten) as the now vanished Nefertiti, was crowned co-regent to Akhenaten when he (Smenkhkare) was about sixteen.
It is a very real possiblity that Smenkhkare was Akhenaten's son.

Her name, which means "the beautiful one is come," is of Egyptian origin, and evidence indicates that she had an Egyptian wet-nurse or governess of noble rank, which has led to the belief that she was born within the circle of the Egyptian royal court. Nefertiti was born around 1390 B.C.E. There is little known about Ankhesenamun (meaning “She lives through Amun” or “Living through Amun”). Both are “children of Amonhotep 3.” Sitamon was an “infant sister of Amonhotep 3” whom he married for political reasons, then married the commoner Tiye and made her his “Chief Royal Wife,” indicating other marriages. )and Meritaten replaces her in many inscriptions. It is a matter of great controversy as to whether or not Smenkhkare continued to reign after Akhenaten died. The period is named after the capital city established by Akhenaten, son of Amenhotep III.Akhenaten started his reign as Amenhotep IV, but changed his name when he discarded all other religions and declared the Aten or sun disc as the only god.
