His father was Johann "Hans" Schindler, the owner of a farm machinery business, and his mother was Franziska "Fanny" Schindler (née Luser). Toward the end of the war he started to feel bad about what was happening around him and he helped his workers escape Nazi Germany. The region where Oskar grew up and attended a German-language school was also known as the Sudetenland. Oskar Schindler was born in Svitavy, Eastern Czech Republic on the 28 th of April 1908.
