Histoire. The catastrophe, known as the 1920 Haiyuan Earthquake, occurred at 7.06pm local time, with the epicenter located in Haiyuan, then a county in Gansu but now a part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
With a magnitude of 7.8 to 8.5 on the Richter scale, around 273,400 people died.
